E. D. Baxter was a prominent citizen of Nashville and the state of Tennessee. He was a nationally acclaimed attorney having argued numerous cases before the United States Supreme Court. He served as a substitute Justice on the Tennessee Supreme Court as appointed by the Governor, he helped establish and served as department head at Vanderbilt University Law School, and remained active in Confederate Veteran affairs, often speaking at gatherings. The Nashville Bar Association held a special meeting to plan a fitting memorial for Judge Baxter. Every member of the bar was in attendance at the memorial.
Baxter's death on June 12, 1910 was front page, headline news in the NashvilleTennessean. His death was publicized nationally in Confederate Veteran Magazine. Though he had gained national fame, he never forgot his roots and his obituary appeared in his hometown newspaper, THE COLUMBIA HEARALD.
